What is RoomAlyzer?
RoomAlyzer is IoT Fabrikken's cloud platform for wireless building sensors. It ingests data from gateways, stores it in a time-series database, serves dashboards and alarms, and exposes an API and MQTT feed so the data can flow onwards to BMS, FM and BI tools.

Yes. Every customer can export all historical sensor readings as CSV or Parquet, plus metadata (rooms, floor plans, thresholds) as JSON. There's no export fee and no lock-in.

What parameters does RoomAlyzer measure for indoor climate?
CO₂ (400–5000 ppm), temperature, relative humidity and, depending on the sensor, VOC (TVOC), particulate matter (PM2.5) and illuminance. All parameters are sampled continuously and reported at intervals you configure.

How accurate are the CO₂ measurements?
Typically ±30 ppm or ±3% of reading, whichever is larger, across the 400–2000 ppm range that matters for classrooms and offices. Sensors self-calibrate against the outdoor background during regular ventilation cycles.

What CO₂ threshold should we use?
EN 16798 Category II defines 800–1200 ppm as acceptable, and most of our school customers set alarms at 1200 ppm. Where Danish BR18 applies, CO₂ must stay below 1000 ppm during occupied hours; check your local building rules for the equivalent limit in your country.

Do we need one sensor per room?
Yes, one per room is the rule of thumb. Very large rooms such as auditoriums and sports halls may need two or three sensors for accurate zone coverage.

How do we document compliance for a workplace inspection?
The platform generates PDF reports with historical readings, exceedances, actions taken and resulting recovery curves, formatted to attach directly to a Danish APV or equivalent workplace assessment.

Can the CO₂ data drive ventilation automatically?

What is a normal indoor CO2 level?
Outdoor air sits at around 420 ppm. A room in use with good air change typically stays below 800 ppm. Between 800 and 1,200 ppm the air is getting used up, and above 1,200 ppm the air change is insufficient for the number of people in the room.

Is CO2 at those levels dangerous?
No, not in itself — the levels found in ordinary buildings are far below anything harmful to health. CO2 is used as an indicator: when the figure is high, the room's air is not being changed, and everything else builds up with it — moisture, odours and airborne particles. That usually shows up as tiredness, heaviness and poorer concentration.

Where should a CO2 sensor be placed?
In the occupied zone — where people actually are — and not right next to a window, a door or an air inlet, where fresh air would fool the reading. One sensor per room is the starting point; large or subdivided rooms may need more.

Can I be alerted when a room breaches the threshold?
Yes. You set up a notification on the sensor with the threshold and sensitivity you want, and you receive an email or text message when it is breached. The sensitivity determines how long the level has to stay above the threshold before the message goes out — so you hear about real problems, not about every packed meeting.

Do the same CO2 thresholds apply in every room?
The most widely used thresholds (800/1,200 ppm) apply to offices, schools and similar rooms under EN 16798-1. But a lecture theatre, a sports hall and a server room place different demands — which is why each room is assigned a scenario with thresholds suited to how it is used, and the system colours everything according to those.

What exactly does EPBD 2024 require on indoor climate?
The directive (EU 2024/1275, Article 13) requires building owners to document the indoor climate as part of the building's performance, with EN 16798-1 as the reference standard. How that plays out in practice depends on national implementation, so the specific obligation for your particular buildings should be settled with your consultant or the relevant authority. The directive applies across EU and EEA markets; in the UK, the same requirements are usually met through certification schemes such as BREEAM, DGNB and LEED and through the domestic EPC rules rather than through the directive itself.

Which sensors are needed?
At least temperature, humidity and CO2 in every zone to be documented. The number follows the room type — a single office under 50 m² manages with one, while an open-plan office is usually counted at one to two sensors per 100 m².

Why can't I see my sensors in the EPBD wizard?
Because only sensors with an assigned EPBD scenario are shown. The scenario is what sets which comfort category the room is measured against, and without it the report does not know what to calculate compliance against. It is assigned under Administration → Thresholds.

How long a period should the report cover?
At least three months gives a statistically representative picture, and for full-year compliance you should report at least once a year. If the climate control is strongly seasonal, quarterly reports give a truer picture than a single annual one.

Is the report an approval?
No. It documents what has been measured and how that relates to the categories in EN 16798-1. Assessment, approval and any reporting sit with the authority, auditor or consultant — we do not certify, and we do not replace a qualified survey of the building.

What is a good indoor humidity level?
In rooms where people spend time, 35–65 %RH is a reasonable band. Below 30% the air feels dry, and above 70% the risk of condensation on cold surfaces rises. Museums and archives work to different bands — Bizot Green 2023, for example, uses 40–60 %RH with no more than ±10 %RH of fluctuation in 24 hours.

Why is the air so dry in winter?
Because cold outdoor air holds very little water. When it is warmed to room temperature it can hold far more water than it brought with it, and the relative humidity falls. The colder it is outside and the more you ventilate, the drier it gets indoors. It shows clearly when you put outdoor temperature and indoor humidity on the same chart.

What is the difference between relative and absolute humidity?
Relative humidity is a percentage of what the air can hold at the current temperature — it changes when the temperature changes, even if the amount of water stays the same. Absolute humidity is the actual amount of water in grams per cubic metre. When you want to know whether moisture has genuinely entered the room, absolute humidity is the figure to look at.

Can the sensor tell me whether mould is coming?
It can tell you whether the climate supports mould growth, and how long it has done so. That is what the mould index from the VTT model expresses on a scale from 0 to 6. It cannot see whether mould is already sitting behind a cupboard — a high index is a reason for a physical inspection, not a finding of damage.

Where should a humidity sensor go if I suspect a cold corner?
The sensor measures the air, not the surface, so put it in the occupied zone close to the exposed area rather than squeezing it in behind the cupboard. The combination of the room's humidity and the dew point tells you how cold a surface has to be before water settles on it — and that is the calculation that shows whether the cold corner is at risk.

What counts as a deviation?
Time when the reading sits outside the sensor's applicable thresholds — either below or above. If the sensor has been assigned a scenario, the scenario's figures apply, including the difference between summer and winter. Otherwise the sensor's own thresholds are used.

What is the difference between the longest and the largest deviation?
Longest measures duration: how many hours in a row the room sat outside the band. Largest measures distance: how far from the threshold it went. A room can top one list and not appear on the other at all, and they typically point to different causes.

Does a red share of 8% mean something is wrong?
Not necessarily. Eight per cent spread across a whole month in a room that sees little use is a different matter from eight per cent falling between 13:00 and 15:00 every weekday. Look at the 24-hour distribution before your team draws conclusions — it is the distribution that points to the cause.

Can we see deviations for a whole building at once?
Yes. Status can be reported for a whole location rather than a single sensor, and the ranking shows locations against one another until you expand one of them into individual rooms. If your team has limited location access, you only see the locations you have access to.

Do empty rooms and outdoor sensors count towards the figures?
Outdoor sensors are kept out, so a warm summer's day outside does not contaminate the indoor picture. Rooms standing empty do count, though, if they have sensors and thresholds — which is often the whole point, because a store or a server room has to hold its climate whether anyone is there or not.

What is a scenario in practice?
A preset set of thresholds for temperature, humidity, CO2, VOC and sound level, tailored to a room type and with separate summer and winter thresholds. It decides when the room shows green, amber or red — everywhere in the system, from the dashboard to the reports.

Why does my office have different thresholds from the museum store?
Because the two rooms each protect something different. The office follows EN 16798-1, with the focus on human comfort. The store follows preservation standards such as Bizot Green or ASHRAE, with the focus on protecting objects from swings in temperature and humidity. The same climate can be comfortable for people and damaging to a wooden sculpture.

What is the CO2 threshold for a school classroom?
The School classroom scenario has a green zone up to 800 ppm and an amber zone up to 1,200 ppm. Above 1,200 ppm is the red zone. The thresholds follow EN 16798-1 category II and the Building Regulations.

Can we build our own scenario?
Yes. Under Administration → Thresholds you create a new scenario and define the thresholds for every parameter yourself. Your own scenarios sit in a group of their own, are not shared with other accounts, and have no standard behind them — they are your own figures, and it says so.

What happens to the old thresholds when I assign a scenario?
The scenario becomes the room's yardstick from then on, and the charts use the catalogue's figures wherever a scenario is assigned. If a sensor has thresholds of its own, they are used only where there is no scenario. If you want to adjust the scenario's figures for that particular sensor, it can be applied and the values then fine-tuned.

How many temperature sensors does a room need?
One per thermal zone is the minimum. An ordinary office under 50 m² manages with one. An open-plan office is typically counted at one to two per 100 m², and a room with windows facing both north and south should have one at each end, because the two sides behave differently across the day.

How accurately does a temperature sensor measure?
It depends on the type. [Full+](/en/sensors/full-plus/) sensor and [Mini+](/en/sensors/mini-plus/) sensor measure to ±0.1 °C, the Temperature sensor to ±0.25 °C, and the older A-series sensors to ±0.3 °C. Drift is under 0.03 °C a year for the newer sensors, so a sensor stays reliable for many years. That is enough for operational monitoring, but it is not an accredited measurement.

Can you use the measurements as evidence for the HSE?
You can document what was actually measured during occupied hours, and that is often what the discussion is about. But RoomAlyzer sensors are operational monitoring, not an accredited health and safety measurement. They work well as input to a thermal comfort risk assessment, which is what the HSE expects when employees complain, but a formal measurement sets requirements for measuring height and radiant shielding among other things, and placement is your own responsibility.

Why does the curve suddenly jump several degrees?
First check whether there is a relocation marker on that day in the chart. If the sensor has been moved to another room, the curve describes two different rooms before and after, and the jump does not belong to the room. If there is no marker, the usual explanations are a window that has been opened, sun on the façade, or a system that has changed its operating mode.

What about the temperature outside working hours?
That is often the most interesting part. A night setback to 16–17 degrees outside occupied hours is common practice, but it only works if the building can get back to comfort in the morning. With continuous monitoring you can see both: whether the setback actually happens, and whether the rooms are ready when people arrive.

Do I get SMS or email?
Both are possible, and you choose per rule. Recipients do not have to be users in the system — you can send to a facilities inbox or to an on-call phone. The language is set per rule too, so a German operations partner can get the message in German, even though you may well work in English, Danish or Swedish.

How do I avoid being told the same thing every day?
Adjust the sensitivity so a brief breach does not count, and consider whether the threshold is set right for that particular room. If it is a recurring pattern you already know about — the meeting room after lunch — it is usually not an alarm, but something to solve with ventilation or meeting scheduling.

Can I switch the alarms off for a period?
Yes. Every rule has a toggle that turns it on and off without you losing the setup. That is the right approach during refurbishment, a holiday shutdown or while a plant is out of service — better than deleting the rule and trying to remember it afterwards.

Can I be told about something that is not a single reading?
Yes, for humidity fluctuations. The Bizot fluctuation alert looks at the difference between the highest and the lowest humidity over 24 hours and only responds once the threshold has been crossed for a number of consecutive days. It is sent by email only, and it is intended for collections and materials, not for comfort.

Who should be the recipient?
Whoever can do something. An alarm to a shared inbox with no owner is not really an alarm at all. In practice two recipients often works best: the operations manager who acts, and a shared inbox so the message is not lost while someone is on holiday.

Is indoor climate the same as air quality?
No. Air quality is part of the indoor climate — typically CO2 and VOCs — but the indoor climate also covers the thermal side (temperature and humidity) and often sound and light. So when someone says 'poor indoor climate', it can cover four different problems. Ask what they noticed, and measure all three core parameters so your team does not solve the wrong one.

What is a good indoor climate in numbers?
There is no single answer for every room. An ordinary office under EN 16798-1 category II sits in the green at roughly 22–26 °C in summer, 35–65 %RH and below 800 ppm CO2. A school classroom uses the same CO2 band. A museum store, by contrast, is governed by the preservation of the objects rather than by human comfort. Choose the band according to how the room is used, and follow it during the hours the room is occupied.

Why can a building be approved and the rooms still feel stuffy?
The Building Regulations set requirements for how a building is designed and constructed, and that is demonstrated with calculations before anyone moves in. The indoor climate in operation is how the rooms behave afterwards — with real people, sun, furniture and habits. The two do not contradict each other. A continuous series of measurements answers the operational question, but it does not replace the documentation from the building control process.

Do I have to measure every parameter in every room?
Start with temperature, humidity and CO2 in the rooms where people spend long periods and where the complaints come from. VOCs, sound and light matter when chemicals, noise or lighting are part of the problem — not as standard in every store cupboard. One sensor in the occupied zone per room is the starting point; large or subdivided rooms may need more.

Can we follow the indoor climate without logging in every day?
Yes. The sensor list and the dashboard are for the person who wants to look. Notifications are for the person who just wants to be told when a threshold is crossed. Which standard do you follow for preservation climate?
EN 15757 is the European standard we default to; it defines acceptable daily and seasonal variation bands relative to each object's historical climate rather than a single absolute setpoint. DGNB, WELL and local diocese guidelines layer on top.

One sensor per micro-climate zone. A single nave might need three sensors (chancel, nave, under the organ gallery) because each responds differently to heating and visitor influx.

How long do the batteries last?

How do we present the data to our diocese or board?
Use the preservation report template: a monthly PDF with bands, exceedances, actions and annotations. Most customers send it directly to their diocese conservator or board chair.

What exactly does EN 15757 require?
The standard describes how an acceptable climate band is derived from the room's own historical climate, rather than setting a universal target value. It focuses on humidity fluctuations, because those are what cause mechanical damage to hygroscopic materials. So it does not say that every collection has to sit at a particular figure.

Why not simply measure against 50% relative humidity?
Because the object is acclimatised to the room it stands in. An abrupt shift to a textbook ideal forces the material through a movement it would not otherwise have had. A stable climate that sits a little away from the ideal is usually better than a quick route towards it.

How long does monitoring have to run before I get a result?
At least 45 days before a safe band is shown. A full year before the band counts as established, with both a summer and a winter profile. Until then the status reads Learning, which is more honest than showing a band that will not hold.

Which material category should I choose?
Choose for the most sensitive thing the sensor is there to protect. Robust (±10%) suits stone, metal and glass. Medium (±7%) suits canvas and paper. Sensitive (±5%) suits wooden panels, inlaid and polychrome wood, and historical objects. If in doubt, the narrower band is the cautious choice.

What do I do if the status changes to Stress?
Look at the analysis chart to see where the excursions fall. If they coincide with the start of the heating season, with visitor numbers, with airing, or with a change in the weather, that points straight at the cause. The fix is usually to slow the rate of change — heating more gradually, airing for shorter periods more often, or dehumidifying rather than heating.

What does a mould index of 2 mean?
That there is microscopic growth: conditions have been favourable enough for spores to be active, but nothing is visible yet. It is the early warning, and the right moment to do something about the humidity level — not a sign that damage has already been done.

At what humidity does mould start to grow?
There is no single limit, because it depends on temperature, material and duration. As a guide, sustained relative humidity above 80% is clearly in the risk zone for sensitive materials, while 65–75% over a long period can be enough. That is precisely why the model calculates the combination over time instead of using a fixed threshold.

Do I need to register my sensors?
No. Every sensor with temperature and humidity in the RoomAlyzer Air system is given material class SQ2 automatically and is included in the calculation. Administration → Mould VTT is where you change the class, adjust the drying rate or opt a sensor out.

Why is there a dash instead of an index?
Because the figure is still being fetched or calculated in the background. The list refreshes itself after a few seconds. Note that a dash in a report means the fetch failed — not that there is no risk.

Can the index fall again?
Yes. If the climate becomes drier or colder, growth is inhibited and the index falls. That is why the trend is part of the assessment: a falling curve means the strategy your team has put in place is working.

Is this conservation heating?
No. Classic conservation heating is a system that controls the heat via a hygrostat in order to keep humidity down. Heating waste is an estimate of how much warmer the room has been than preservation required. We calculate — we do not control.

How much can we save?
That depends entirely on how far above the setpoint you are and how long your heating season lasts. The analysis shows your own figure for 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days. We do not quote a general savings figure, because it would be a guess about your building.

Why does it show zero waste in summer?
Because May to September always counts as outside the heating season. Warmth above target in that period comes from the sun and from internal sources, not from the heating, and it would be wrong to call it heating waste. In the winter months, a seven-day rolling average of the outdoor temperature decides whether it really is heating season.

Which strategy should we choose?
The dynamic one is energy-optimal, because it lets the humidity limit follow the risk at the current temperature. The static one is easier to explain and to check. If you have a preservation policy with a fixed humidity limit, static often makes the most sense; if you are looking for the savings, dynamic is where to look.

What does it take to get started?
Not much, and it is all in one place in RoomAlyzer Air when you begin: you simply set up sensors measuring temperature and humidity in the room, then enter the building data under Administration → Heating waste — floor area, insulation, heat source and strategy. With those figures, the difference between the measured and the desired temperature can be converted into energy and pounds.

How many sensors does a store need?
That depends on the size of the room and on how uniform the climate is. A store with cold external walls and a warm middle is really several climates, and a single sensor in the centre of the room will not catch the condensation risk at the wall. Start with the most exposed places: external walls, floor level, close to the most vulnerable objects.

How long before the figures mean anything?
It varies. The mould index and the Preservation Index start to make sense after a few weeks. EN 15757 needs at least 45 days of data before a safe band is shown, and a full year before the seasonal profile is complete. ASHRAE requires a full year with at least around 8,000 valid hours. The system says clearly when the history is too short, rather than showing a figure that will not hold.

Can the analyses be used in buildings without air conditioning?
Yes, and that is often where they are worth the most. A church or an unheated store cannot be controlled with a thermostat, but it can be controlled through behaviour: when to air the room, when to heat for a service, whether to dehumidify. For that there is also the ventilation analysis, a forecast of when it is safe to open the windows.

What if one object needs a completely different climate from the rest of the room?
Then the room's figures are not the right answer for that object. Consider a sensor close to it, or a display case with its own climate. The analyses describe the climate the sensor is standing in — they do not know what the room contains, beyond the material class you have set yourselves.

Are these the same sensors as for indoor climate?
Yes. Any sensor that measures both temperature and relative humidity can feed into the preservation analyses, and there is no manual sign-up for mould, ASHRAE or Bizot. What separates preservation from indoor climate is not the hardware, but what the figures are held up against.

How do occupancy sensors work without identifying people?
We use PIR (passive infrared), mmWave and thermopile sensors that detect motion and heat signatures but can't see faces or identify individuals. No cameras, no badges, no personal data.

Is occupancy data personal data under GDPR?
Aggregated room occupancy isn't personal data. Desk-level occupancy combined with hot-desk bookings could be, so we provide role-based access controls and retention settings specifically for that case.

PIR sensors are >98% accurate for presence detection in rooms up to 40 m². mmWave sensors handle bigger spaces and can count people, typically within ±1 at any given moment.

Can we automatically release no-show meetings?
Yes. Combine the PIR signal with a calendar integration (Google, Microsoft 365, Pronestor) and the platform will release the room after a grace period; the default is 10 minutes.

Can we monitor a home office?
We strongly advise against it. Employer monitoring of home workspaces is legally fraught and culturally corrosive. Focus on corporate premises and let employees self-report home setups if they wish.

How long does the data stay around?
Room-level occupancy is retained for 24 months by default. Desk-level data defaults to 6 months and can be configured per room or per desk to match your works-council agreement.

How large should a meeting room be?
It depends on the meetings you actually hold — and that is precisely what the analysis measures. The general rule is that the distribution of room sizes should resemble the distribution of meeting sizes. If most meetings are two to four people and most rooms seat eight or more, there is an imbalance, whatever the total capacity says.

Can you measure the number of people in a meeting?
Yes, if the room has a sensor per seat. Then the actual number of people present at the same time is known, and the room can feed into meeting size and the right-sizing analysis. If the room has only a motion sensor, only occupied or free is known, and that is marked clearly on the pages.

What are wasted seat hours?
Capacity that was available but never used: the hours when a room was in use with fewer people than it is laid out for. It is the figure that makes the cost of oversized rooms concrete, instead of leaving it to be discussed as a feeling.

Can we test a refit before we carry it out?
Yes, that is what the scenario page is for. You put together a hypothetical list of rooms, run it against your historical meetings, and see what share could have gone ahead, how many would have been left without space, and how much floor area and cost is freed up.

What period should we analyse?
The pages have a 7, 30 or 90-day selector, and for a decision about floor area 90 days is the minimum — preferably more, so that both holiday periods and busy weeks are included. A single week tells you about that week, not about your meeting culture.

How is occupancy measured?
With presence sensors at the seats. [Desk](/en/sensors/desk/) sensors know the actual number of people present at the same time, while [Motion](/en/sensors/motion/) sensors (PIR) only know occupied or free. Both count towards how often and when something is used — but only per-seat sensors can say anything about numbers, and therefore about size.

Can we see who is sitting where?
No. The sensors register presence at a seat, not identity. The analyses are about desks, tags and locations — not about people.

How long do we need to measure before the figures can be used?
The history is built overnight, so you have figures from the first few days. For a decision about floor area, though, you should have several months, so that both holiday periods and busy weeks are included. The AI assistant works on the last three months by default and widens the window if you ask about a longer period.

Can we filter by department?
Yes, using tags on the desks. On the floor plan you can highlight one or more tags so those desks stand out in full colour while the rest are dimmed, and in the charts several tags can be stacked with a combined line on top. If you select several tags, the overlap sums higher than the total — that is deliberate, so shared seats are shown honestly.

How fast is the alarm?
From water hitting the sensor to an alarm leaving the platform takes under 2 minutes for NB-IoT-connected sensors. SMS, email, webhook and ticketing integrations then fan out the alarm to on-call staff.

What's the false-positive rate?
Well below 1 per 1000 sensor-years in production deployments. Condensation, cleaning and spills can all trigger sensors; we tune thresholds and alarm debouncing to your specific risk profile.

Yes. The link in the alarm email or text message leads to a public acknowledgement page where you choose a status, write a description and can attach up to three photos. It needs no login, and that is deliberate — the person standing in front of the problem does not always have an account.

What happens if nobody responds to the first stage?
After the delay you have set on the stage, the alarm moves on to the next stage with a different recipient group and, if you want, a different channel. You decide the number of stages and the delays between them yourself.

Why did we not get a text message?
The most common reason is that the stage is set to SMS while the recipient group has no phone numbers. The system then sends by email instead, and a warning appears under the stage. Use Test stage — it shows you recipient by recipient who was reached and who was skipped.

Can different buildings each have their own alarm chain?
Yes. The rule is set per location and covers everything below it, and when an alarm goes off, the rule that applies is the one whose location sits closest. If you have both a rule on the building and one on a particular room, the room's rule is the one that counts.

Do the others find out when I have taken the job?
Yes. When someone takes the job or acknowledges the alarm, the other recipients get an email with the same fact box as the original alarm — but the subject line is not a new water alarm, so it is clear that this is an update and not a new incident.

How many water sensors does it take?
Fewer than most people think, if they are in the right places. Start where a drip gets expensive: plant rooms, below-ground rooms, under white goods, at the risers and in rooms above something valuable. One sensor in the right place beats five put wherever there happened to be room.

How long does the battery last?
The [water detectors](/en/sensors/water-detector/) are specified for around ten years. Battery level and signal strength are shown in the sensor list, so you can keep an eye on them without walking round to look — and a sensor that stops reporting appears as silent on the dashboard.

What is a silent sensor?
A sensor that has not sent data within the number of hours you have set as the silent threshold. It is not an alarm about water, but a warning that you can no longer rely on it. The cause is usually a flat battery, a sensor that has been moved, or a signal problem.

Can we see the sensors on our own floor plan?
Yes. Floor plans are uploaded under Administration, and the water sensors are placed as dots on them. The floor plan selector lists only the drawings that actually have a [Water detector](/en/sensors/water-detector/) placed on them, with the number of dots beside the name.

Does the system shut the water off when the alarm goes?
No. RoomAlyzer Water registers and raises the alarm — it does not control valves. Automatic shut-off requires a separate installation. What it does give you is a very short time from water contact to message, and that is usually where the biggest share of the damage reduction lies.

Do the sensors need calibration?
CO₂ sensors self-calibrate against outdoor levels; humidity sensors drift about 1% RH per year; temperature sensors are stable for their lifetime. We recommend a factory recalibration every five years for preservation-critical deployments.

What's the typical battery life?
Three to seven years depending on sensor type, reporting interval and ambient temperature. The platform shows a battery gauge for every sensor and predicts replacement dates.
