Preservation monitoring: six answers on whether the climate is harming the collection

What does Archivstelle Sigmaringen say?

In the decentralised archives of the parishes and offices we look after across the Archdiocese of Freiburg, the indoor climate is decisive for the long-term preservation of irreplaceable cultural treasures: medieval and early modern charters, account books, and the administrative records of the parishes and church institutions. Old paper documents and sensitive parchment react to swings in humidity. A change in relative humidity of 5 per cent can make paper warp and parchment tear. Relative humidity above 55 per cent over a longer period can also lead to microbial spores, which cause damage and irreversible losses to the holdings and cultural treasures. That is exactly what we get with the RoomAlyzer solution from IoT Fabrikken.

What makes the decisive difference for us in everyday work is the high measurement accuracy and the long-term stability of the sensors. The whole system is also simple and quick to use. We fit the sensors and already receive all the data and warnings from the various sites automatically. The central RoomAlyzer dashboard gives us a complete overview of every room at once. It works independently of our local network or any IT network available on site, which takes the load off our own IT department and offers a high level of data security.

The system's real-time alerting acts as our digital watchman. When humidity moves outside the limits we have set, we are notified immediately by SMS or email. Combined with a long battery life and sensors that can stay in the decentralised archives across our wide area of operation, RoomAlyzer gives us maximum certainty in day-to-day preservation.
